BambooSIM: prepaid travel eSIMs for 200+ destinations

BambooSIM is an Australian company that sells travel eSIMs: prepaid mobile data plans that you download to your phone instead of putting in a physical SIM card. You buy a plan online, install it before you leave and switch it on when you land, which avoids your home network's roaming charges and the hunt for a local SIM shop at the airport.

It covers more than 200 countries and regions, and suits UK travellers heading beyond the places their own contract covers, people on multi-country trips and anyone who wants mobile data that's ready the moment they arrive. Prices show in US dollars by default, but you can switch the currency to British pounds in the language and currency menu.

What's worth a look

• Europe eSIM, currently from $5.95 for a 3GB, 30-day data-only plan covering 32 countries. There is also a 5GB seven-day plan at $7.95 and an Orange plan with calls, texts and 20GB of data for $39.95 over 30 days.
• Japan eSIM, currently from $8.95 for a three-day unlimited plan on the KDDI (au) network. Fixed bundles and 90-day plans on SoftBank are also available, with the 30GB 90-day plan at $30.
• USA eSIM, currently from $7.99, for city breaks and road trips across the States.
• Thailand eSIM, currently from $5.99, a popular pick for backpackers and beach holidays.

Checkout is quick, and payment is by Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Once payment goes through, the eSIM is usually ready within seconds: you either download it for automatic installation or scan the QR code that's emailed to you, along with setup instructions. If anything goes wrong, support is available 24 hours a day through live chat and a ticket system.

Each plan page lists the networks used, whether hotspot sharing is allowed and when the plan starts counting days. Prices can change, so check the page before you buy.

Current offers

• Student discount: students can unlock discounts by verifying their enrolment in a supported country.
• Low-cost Europe data from $5.95 for 3GB over 30 days.
• USA plans from $7.99.
• Thailand plans from $5.99.

How to save more

• On a multi-country trip, compare a regional plan against single-country ones. One Europe eSIM can cover a whole interrail route.
• Pick the shortest trip length that fits. Some plans can't be extended, so the site suggests choosing a slightly longer one if you're unsure, but there's no need to buy far more than you'll use.
• Pay in pounds, or with a card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees, as the company bills from Australia.
