jAlbum is desktop software for Windows and macOS that builds web photo galleries. You drag in your photos and videos, choose a design (jAlbum calls them skins), press Make, and upload the result to your own website or to jalbum.net. It was started in 2002 by David Ekholm and is run by JAlbum AB in Stockholm. It suits families sharing holiday photos, hobby photographers, clubs and schools, and professionals who want client galleries or a portfolio on their own site.

Paid plans are bought through FastSpring and are not priced in pounds. When we checked, prices were shown in euros including VAT, with an option to switch to US dollars, so a UK card may pick up a currency conversion fee.

What's worth a look

  • jAlbum free download: currently free. The free licence lets you make galleries of up to 24 objects, with no updates or support and no commercial use.
  • Standard licence: for non-commercial use on your own website, with no gallery limit, a year of updates and priority email support. The price is shown at checkout.
  • Pro licence: currently €89 including VAT when we checked. It adds commercial use and shopping-cart features in some skins, so photographers can sell prints from their galleries.
  • Premium account: includes 10GB of web space on jalbum.net plus the Standard licence, for people without their own website. Power and Super accounts raise that to 100GB and 300GB and add commercial use.

There are also apps for Android and iOS and an online version, so you can add to albums away from your computer.

How buying works

Licences never expire: once you've paid, the version you have keeps working, and the first year of updates and support is included. Accounts work differently. They're subscriptions that include web space and a licence for as long as the account is active, which you can pay monthly, yearly or two years at a time.

Storage can be in Europe or the US, and you can link up to two of your own domain names to a Premium account. The licence pages say paying customers get email replies within 24 hours on business days, and there's a community forum for help with skins and settings.

How to save more

  • Try the free version first. If 24 objects per gallery is enough for you, you may not need to pay at all.
  • Only pay for storage if you need it. If you already have a website and hosting, a licence on its own is the cheaper route.
  • Buying for a club, school or team? Multi-user licences start at 25% off for two to ten users.
