SpeakBrit is an online English academy that teaches live lessons over Zoom with qualified British teachers. It works with children from age 4, teenagers preparing for exams and university, and adults who want to speak more confidently, pass IELTS or improve their Business English. It suits families abroad who want their children to learn British English, as well as adults who prefer a real teacher to an app.

Classes are deliberately small, with no more than five children or teens in a group and six adults. Every course is also available one-to-one. SpeakBrit says anyone teaching under-18s must hold an Enhanced DBS certificate with a Children's Barred List check before their first lesson, and parents get a written summary after each session plus a monthly progress report.

What's worth a look

  • Young learner group classes (ages 4 to 12): two 30-minute live sessions a week in a group of up to five, currently £89.99 a month. One-to-one private lessons with the same schedule are £199.99 a month.
  • Early Explorers (ages 4 to 6): first words and phonics for the youngest learners, taught through play, stories and gentle repetition.
  • Adult courses: Spoken English, General English and Business English, with one 60-minute session a week, currently £89.99 a month in a group or £199.99 a month one-to-one.
  • IELTS preparation: fixed programmes rather than a subscription, from a four-week final review at £299 to an eight-week intensive at £999 and a six-month academy at £1,999.

Teen plans for ages 13 to 18 were marked as launching soon when we checked, so ask SpeakBrit about availability if you have a teenager.

Current offers

We don't have any SpeakBrit codes listed yet. On its own site, SpeakBrit offers:

  • Free 20-minute assessment: a relaxed Zoom chat with a British educator to find the right course and level. No card details are needed.
  • 10% sibling discount: available to families enrolling more than one child on a monthly plan.
  • IELTS instalments: pay £299 up front, then two monthly payments of £350 for the intensive or five of £340 for the academy.

How to save more

  • Start with the free assessment so you don't pay for a course at the wrong level.
  • Choose group classes if your child enjoys learning with others. They cost less than half the private plan for the same number of sessions.
  • Use the cooling-off period wisely. You can cancel within 14 days of enrolling and get a refund for any lessons not yet taken, and after that monthly plans can be stopped from the next billing date with no notice period.
