Transparent: networking, NAS and PC kit from a UK supplier

Transparent, the trading name of Transparent Communications Ltd, has supplied IT, AV and networking hardware in the UK since 2002. It started as a family business in South Wales selling phones and Bluetooth headsets, and has been based near Portsmouth since an acquisition in 2011. Today its catalogue runs to tens of thousands of products from brands such as DrayTek, Synology, QNAP, Netgear, TP-Link, Logitech, Trust, HP, Dell, Lenovo and Cisco.

Much of its trade is with businesses, so many prices are shown excluding VAT, but anyone can buy. It suits small offices setting up a network, home users after a better router or a NAS for backups, and anyone who wants trade-style ordering for peripherals. Remember to add 20% VAT when comparing an ex-VAT price with high-street shops.

The website is organised by category and by brand, with long product titles that spell out model numbers and key specifications. That's useful when you need an exact part, such as a particular router model or a NAS with a set amount of storage. Alongside networking gear you'll also find memory, storage enclosures, keyboards, mice, headsets, webcams and conferencing equipment, so it can cover most of a small office's kit in one order. Deliveries mostly go by DPD or Parcelforce, and the company has been trading for more than 20 years.

How to save more

• Combine purchases so your order passes £150 ex VAT and qualifies for free mainland delivery.
• Compare the VAT-inclusive total, not the ex-VAT headline, when checking prices elsewhere.
• Look at the brand pages, such as DrayTek, Synology or TP-Link, to compare models side by side before choosing, and read the full specification to make sure a router suits your broadband connection type.
