World Businesses for Sale is an online marketplace for buying and selling businesses. Its head office is in West Bromwich. Listings cover the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and Europe, with areas for shops, cafés and restaurants, service businesses, manufacturing, franchises, online businesses and warehouse space. Buyers can browse for free. It's mainly for owners of smaller businesses who want to advertise a sale without paying a broker's commission.

What's worth a look

  • Basic PAYG Selling Plan: currently £49. Includes help writing your listing and access to the site's pool of buyers, with no commission on the sale.
  • Standard PAYG Selling Plan: currently £75. The middle option of the three no-commission plans.
  • Premium PAYG Selling Plan: currently £99. Adds general pricing guidance and marketing of your listing across search and social media.
  • Swift Sales: a commission-based service, with a success fee starting at 5% and a buyer search service from £2,750.
  • Free business valuation: send turnover, profit and premises details and get an initial estimate by email. The site says it is guidance only, not a formal valuation.

Each pay-as-you-go plan comes as a one-month plan, a monthly subscription or a six-month plan. Prices include VAT and can change.

The process is simple. After you buy a plan, you send the team your business details, photos and key figures. They write and tidy up the listing and send it back for your approval before it goes live. The site says it contacts new customers within 24 hours to get started. Monthly subscribers can cancel at any time, which makes the pay-as-you-go plans a lower-commitment way to test the market than signing with a broker.

The free valuation is aimed at cafés, restaurants, takeaways, convenience stores, salons, pubs, newsagents, retail shops and online businesses. You provide the business type, location, turnover, profit, years trading and whether the premises are leasehold or freehold. The estimate is based only on what you send, so the more complete your details, the more useful it will be. For anything legal, tax or lending related, get independent professional advice.

Customer service is by phone on 0121 838 2777, Monday to Friday from 9:30am to 5:30pm, or by live chat around the clock. The site aims to reply to contact form messages within one business day. Checkout accepts cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Shop Pay and Klarna.
