Access a GP is a UK membership service that gives you round-the-clock telephone and video appointments with UK-registered GPs. Rather than paying per appointment, you pay a flat monthly, annual or one-off fee, and that single membership covers everyone who lives at your address. It is run from Glasgow and uses established clinical partners: GP appointments are provided through HealthHero, while the counselling and advice lines come from BHSF.

It suits busy households, shift workers, people who travel or work offshore, and anyone who wants the option of speaking to a doctor outside surgery hours. It is not an emergency service and it is not health insurance, so you would still call 999 in an emergency and keep your own NHS GP.

What's worth a look

  • Family Cover Monthly: currently £11.99 a month (prices can change). It includes unlimited calls with no limit on call length, the GP line, the wellbeing helpline and access to the prescription service. There is a three-month minimum term.
  • Family Cover Annual: currently £99.50 a year, paid up front. The site describes this as two months of free cover compared with paying monthly. It runs for twelve months and cannot be refunded part-way through.
  • 14 Day Holiday Cover: currently £39.95 as a single payment, covering a fortnight with no ongoing subscription. Handy if you mainly want cover while you are away.
  • The GP service: you ring the member number, an operator books a phone or video slot, and the doctor calls you back. The site guarantees a callback within 15 minutes of booking.
  • 24/7 wellbeing helpline: included in every plan, with counsellors accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, plus legal and money advice lines.

If a GP decides a private prescription is appropriate, it is sent to Pharmacy2U, which phones you to take payment for the medicine and posts it by Royal Mail 1st class (1 to 2 working days) or Special Delivery to any UK address. That cost is separate from your membership. Controlled drugs cannot be prescribed through the service.

How to save more

  • Work out how long you will use it. Twelve monthly payments of £11.99 come to £143.88, against £99.50 for the annual plan, but the annual plan is non-refundable once taken.
  • For a single trip, the £39.95 holiday cover avoids the three-month minimum on the monthly plan.
  • One membership covers the whole household at the same address, so there is no need for separate plans for each adult.

Access a GP gives telephone and video access to doctors; it does not replace emergency services. Speak to your GP or pharmacist if you have any concerns about your health.
