AlphaBiolabs is a testing laboratory in Warrington, Cheshire, that has been running since 2004. It sells home test kits to the public and also carries out court-ordered and workplace testing for solicitors, local authorities and employers. For home kits, you collect your own sample, usually a cheek swab, post it back in the envelope provided and receive password-protected results by email. Kits are sent in plain packaging.

It suits anyone who wants a private DNA or other test done at home with clear upfront pricing. Bear in mind that results from home kits are for your own information and can't be used in court. If you need a test for legal reasons, AlphaBiolabs offers a separate legal service with observed sample collection.

What's worth a look

  • Paternity test, currently £89 with next-day results and free shipping, or £159 for results the same business day.
  • Baby gender test, currently from £89 with free shipping both ways. You can take your own blood sample with the TinyTAP device for an extra £20, or book a collection at a walk-in centre (+£50) or at home (+£95).
  • Ancestry DNA tests, currently £119 for the DNA Origins or paternal lineage test and £149 for the maternal lineage test. Turnaround varies from 2 days to several weeks depending on the test.
  • Genetic lactose intolerance test, currently £49 with free shipping and results in 4 to 5 business days.
  • Home saliva drug test kit, currently from £11. You read the result on the side of the device at home.

Prices can change, so check the product pages before you order. If you are buying for a legal matter, such as a dispute over child maintenance, look at the legal testing pages instead, as those tests include identity checks and a documented chain of custody.

Current offers

  • Add a genetic coeliac test to the lactose intolerance test for £49, a saving of £20.
  • Free shipping on the £89 paternity test and the lactose intolerance test.
  • Free shipping both ways on the baby gender test.
  • PayPal Pay in 3 interest-free instalments on many tests.

AlphaBiolabs has its own discount codes page, but it showed no codes available when we checked.

How to save more

  • Choose next-day paternity results at £89 unless you really need them the same day, which costs £70 more.
  • For the baby gender test, the TinyTAP home collection option adds less to the price than a walk-in or home visit blood draw.
  • Read the sample instructions carefully before you start. Swabs without enough cells can't be processed, which could mean waiting for a new kit.

Speak to your GP or pharmacist if you have any concerns about your health.
