Barking Heads makes dog food, and its sister brand Meowing Heads does the same for cats. Both are sold direct from the brand's own website, with recipes built around named meat or fish and no added artificial colours or flavourings. The business is part of the IPN group, and you can buy as a one-off or set up a repeat delivery.

It suits owners who want a mid-priced natural recipe delivered to the door, households with both a dog and a cat, and anyone happy to subscribe to keep the price down. The packaging is cheerful and the recipe names are playful, but the product pages list the ingredients and analysis in full if you want to compare.

What's worth a look

• Bowl Lickin' Goodness Chicken Dry Dog Food (All Hounder), currently £11.88 for 2kg or £56.11 for 12kg. The recipe lists 50% free-run chicken with rice and vegetables, and the product page shows 24% protein and 14% fat.
• Fuss Pot Duck Dry Dog Food (All Hounder), currently from £11.88. A duck-based option for dogs that turn their noses up at chicken. Lamb, salmon and fish versions are also in the All Hounder range.
• Puppy Days Turkey Dry Dog Food, currently from £11.88. The puppy recipe in the range, with wet puppy food also available.
• Paw Lickin' Chicken Wet Cat Food, currently from £10.56. From the Meowing Heads cat range, which also includes salmon, turkey and surf and turf recipes, dry food and kitten food.
• Meowing Heads Variety Pack Wet Cat Food 10 x 100g, currently £11.44. A mixed pack is a sensible way to find out which flavour your cat will actually eat before buying in bulk.
