Ever looked up and wondered where that plane is going? NearestPlane answers that from your windowsill. It's a compact LED display that connects to your home WiFi and shows the aircraft closest to you in real time, in its airline's colours, with the flight number, route, aircraft type, altitude, speed and distance.
Each unit is handmade to order in the UK by NearestPlane Limited, a small company based in Hertfordshire. It's an easy fit for plane spotters, frequent flyers, pilots and anyone who lives under a flight path, and it's a ready-made gift for the aviation fan who already has the books.
What's worth a look
- The NearestPlane display: the main and only hardware product. It's currently £124.99, down from £139.99 (prices can change). The box holds the display in a protective case, a USB-C cable and a printed quick-start guide. It needs a 5V 3A USB-C wall plug, which isn't included.
- Make it yours settings: free options on every unit. You can show routes as airport codes or city names, switch units, choose which lines appear, set the scan radius and turn on night mode so the screen sleeps overnight.
- Track any flight: a free feature where you enter a flight number and the display follows that flight anywhere in the world until it lands. It's handy for keeping an eye on family coming home.
- Aviation gift guides: the site's own guides for pilots, cabin crew, plane spotters and more, if you're shopping for someone specific.
There's no subscription and no app to install. Setup runs through your phone and takes about five minutes, and any later changes are made on the website.
It's more than a novelty screen. You can choose which kinds of aircraft it watches for, including airliners, military aircraft, helicopters and light aircraft, and pick from extra details such as registration, heading and time to landing. The website also keeps a dashboard of every flight your display has spotted over the last 24 hours. Support comes from the maker himself over WhatsApp, which is a nice touch for a small business. Note that the display is for interest only. It relies on third-party flight data, so the occasional aircraft may be missing or shown in the wrong place.

How to save more
- Use a phone or tablet charger you already have. Most are 5V 3A, so there's no need to buy a new plug.
