The British Belt Company is the shop front of Arnold Wills & Co, a family-run leather goods factory set up in 1946 in Uppingham, Rutland. For decades it has made belts and small leather goods for other brands, and it still designs and makes its own belts on site, from cutting the leather to fitting the buckle. Three generations of the family have been involved.

It suits anyone after a plain, well-made leather belt for work or weekends, and it's an easy place to put together a gift: belts sit alongside ties, pocket squares, braces, cufflinks, wallets and bags. The company says it buys full grain leather from Leather Working Group approved tanneries, and uses offcuts to make the leather ends on its braces.

The shop sells two main labels: belts under The British Belt Company name and Sophos, which covers a wider range of belts plus accessories. Cufflinks come from Cole Brothers. Prices are in pounds, and overseas visitors can switch to euros, dollars and several other currencies. Customer support runs Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, and the store aims to answer within 24 hours. Orders are usually dispatched within one working day, and because the belts are made on site, the factory can quickly make more of anything that's out of stock.

What's worth a look

• Everyday belts from the Sophos range are good value. The Weybourne 39mm casual leather belt is currently £25, and the Sibson reversible formal leather belt, which gives you two colours in one, is currently £24.
• Belts under The British Belt Company name include the Bradgate casual leather jeans belt, currently £50.
• The Originals is the premium range, made in England with Italian leather. The Foxton full grain leather belt is currently £80 and the Kibworth Italian suede belt is currently £82.
• For finishing touches, plain ribbed braces are currently £15 and a genuine leather bi-fold wallet is currently £25.
• If you need a bag, the brown Harris Tweed holdall is currently £190.
