Hiring a car abroad often means juggling several rental websites, each with its own extras and small print. Carla tries to cut that down. It is a booking site and app that shows cars from rental companies such as Hertz, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Sixt, Europcar and smaller local firms in one search, so you can compare them before you book. The company launched in Istanbul in 2016 and now says it covers more than 25,000 pick-up points in 153 countries.

It suits holidaymakers and business travellers who want to see several rental firms at once, particularly for trips to the United States, where many of its city guides are focused. Prices on its US pages are shown in dollars, so keep an eye on the currency and your card's foreign transaction fees when you pay.

What's worth a look

• Los Angeles car hire: Carla's Los Angeles page says rates at downtown and airport locations start from $10 a day (prices change with dates and demand).
• Orlando car hire: compares Avis, Hertz, Enterprise and others for theme park trips, and offers a Skip The Line package at selected Orlando locations.
• Van and minivan hire: 7, 9 and 12-seat vans for groups, including models such as the Ford Galaxy and Mercedes V-Class in cities like Paris, Munich, Vienna and Prague. Carla suggests booking at least a month ahead.
• Last-minute car hire: a quick way to book when plans change, rather than paying walk-up rates at the desk.
• Under-25 drivers: cars marked "underage fee waived" let younger drivers avoid the young driver charge, which Carla says is usually between $30 and $40 a day.

How to save more

• Book early, then keep checking. If your booking has free cancellation, you can cancel and rebook if the price drops before the 48-hour cut-off.
• Compare airport and city pick-ups. Carla points out that airport desks have longer opening hours but are not always the cheapest, so it is worth checking a downtown office too.
• Watch the currency. If the price is in dollars or euros, pay with a card that has no foreign transaction fees.
