Carmel Car & Limo is a New York car service that has been running airport transfers since 1978. You book a car online, in the Carmel app or by phone, see a fixed price before you travel, and an affiliated driver meets you at the kerb or arrivals. For UK travellers heading to New York, it is a way to sort the ride from JFK, LaGuardia or Newark to your hotel before you fly. Carmel also books transfers in other cities through partner firms, London's airports among them. All prices are in US dollars, and tolls and tips are usually added on top.

What's worth a look

  • Manhattan to JFK in a full-size sedan: currently $64 for up to three passengers, or $49 to LaGuardia and $62 to Newark. A luxury sedan is $69 to JFK, and an SUV for up to six people is $99.
  • Airport to Manhattan pick-ups: currently $61 from JFK in a full-size sedan and $46 from LaGuardia. Carmel adds $6 to $10 for airport pick-ups between 5pm and 5am, so it is worth checking the time of your landing.
  • Hourly hire in New York: a full-size sedan is currently $49 an hour, a stretch limousine $104 an hour and a 24-seat bus $150 an hour, with a two-hour minimum in Manhattan. It suits a day of meetings or a group night out.
  • Weddings, proms and theatre trips: Carmel puts together packages for special occasions, including one-way, return and by-the-hour theatre bookings for Broadway shows. These are quoted on request rather than listed.
  • Worldwide airport transfers: the sample price from Heathrow to central London is currently $94 in a sedan, and the homepage lists special airport prices of $85.87 for Heathrow and London City. Paris CDG, Rome and Dubai are also on the list.

The fleet covers sedans for up to three passengers and three suitcases, minivans for six, larger vans and Sprinters for groups, and coaches of up to 40 seats. Luggage that fits in the boot is free; a case that has to go inside the car costs $10. Pets need a minivan and a carrier, and children under seven need a car seat, which you must bring yourself.

Current offers

  • Download the Carmel app and get $36 Car Cash, given as $6 off each of six trips.
  • Carmel Points: account and app users earn from 1 point per $1 on trips under $100 up to 6 points per $1 on trips of $500 or more, then convert points into Car Cash for later rides.
  • Special airport prices on the homepage, such as $85.87 for Heathrow and London City transfers and $64 for JFK.

How to save more

  • Set up an account or the app before your first ride, as trips booked without one do not earn points.
  • Budget for extras: from Manhattan, the toll to JFK or LaGuardia is likely to be $7.46, and Newark trips always carry tolls from $23.55. Tips are at your discretion on most bookings.
  • Pick the vehicle by luggage as well as people. A minivan at $79 to JFK can work out cheaper than paying for two sedans.
