CasaLatina was set up by two friends, Sharon from Caracas and Aleja from Bogota, who now live in London. They work with artisan groups in Colombia and Venezuela to design and make tableware by hand. The range runs from hand-painted ceramic plates and bowls to black Chamba clay pots for the oven and hob, plus placemats, napkin rings and baskets woven from palm fibre.
It suits people who like to set a colourful table, cooks who want clay dishes that go from oven to table, and anyone looking for a gift that isn't mass-produced. Because each piece is handmade, colours and patterns vary a little, which is part of the appeal. Orders ship from Richmond in south-west London.
The Chamba pieces are worth a closer look if you cook. They are made from black clay from the village of Chamba in Colombia's Tolima region, and CasaLatina sells gratin dishes, cocottes, saute pans and roasting dishes that can go straight from the oven to the table. The ceramics come in a palette of teal, deep blue, golden yellow, rust red, vintage rose and fern green, so you can mix and match across patterns. There is also a made-to-order service for custom plates.
