Cold Case Inc makes online murder mystery games where you play the detective. Each case opens a fictional police computer in your web browser, full of witness statements, recorded interviews, CCTV clips, phone records and photographs, and it's up to you to spot what doesn't add up and submit your theory. It's an independent UK project, written and built by one designer, and it suits puzzle fans, true-crime drama watchers and couples or friends after something different for a night in. The site suggests players aged 13 and over.

What's worth a look

  • Flat 33, currently free: a short case of about 10 to 12 minutes with three suspects, a good way to see how the system works.
  • The Stonewood Mystery, currently £6.99 (was £19.99): the first Cold Case Inc case, rated easy, set in a small village with conflicting accounts.
  • Murder in the Pines, currently £6.99 (was £19.99): the death of a journalist on a camping trip, worked out from crime scene evidence and local rumours.
  • The Waters Edge, currently £6.99 (was £19.99): a hard case about a riverside disappearance, using a fictional social network as part of the evidence.
  • Love, Aisle & Murder, currently £12.99: the newest release, a wedding at Hawthorne Hall, rated easy with a playing time of around 90 to 180 minutes.

Every case page sets out the difficulty, an estimated playing time and the kinds of evidence included, so you can tell before buying whether it leans on video, documents or digital devices. When you think you've cracked it, you submit your conclusions and find out if your theory holds up; if not, you can go back through the files and try again. There's no time limit, so a case can be spread over several evenings.

Everything is digital. After you pay, the case unlocks in your account, and one account can be logged in on two devices at once, so two people can investigate side by side.

Current offers

  • Use code CASE3FOR2 to get three different eligible cases for the price of two, with the cheapest free. Love, Aisle & Murder and gift vouchers are excluded, and it can't be combined with other coupons.
  • Most of the back catalogue is currently £6.99 instead of £19.99.
  • Flat 33 is free to play, with no payment details needed.

How to save more

  • Pair the 3 for 2 code with the £6.99 prices to pick up three cases for about £14.
  • Take the Case Match Quiz on the site to choose a case at the right difficulty, so you don't pay for one that's too easy or too hard.
  • Gift vouchers have no expiry date and can be scheduled for a chosen day, which makes them a handy present for a mystery fan.
