CruiseDirect is an American online cruise agency that has been selling cruises since 2001. Its website lets you search by destination, cruise line, departure port, month and length, then book online or with its advisers by phone or live chat. It covers the big names, including Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, MSC, Princess, Celebrity, Holland America, Cunard, Virgin Voyages and Viking, as well as luxury and river cruise lines.

The site is built for travellers in the United States and Canada. Prices are per person in US dollars, based on two sharing a cabin, and most of its featured departure ports are in the US. UK readers can browse and compare, but you should check with CruiseDirect that you can book from the UK before paying, and allow for exchange rates. It suits expats in North America and anyone planning a cruise that starts in the US. It also has pages for group travel, honeymoon, family, senior and last-minute cruises if you'd rather browse by type of trip.

How to save more

• Use a free hold. Reserve a cabin while you compare fares and flights, then confirm once you're sure.
• Compare onboard credit, not just the fare. A slightly dearer cruise with credit or drinks included can work out cheaper overall.
• Search by departure port. Filtering for Southampton or other European ports can save the cost of flying to the US.
