CuriosityStream: documentary streaming on monthly or annual plans

CuriosityStream (now styled Curiosity Stream) is a streaming service for documentaries and factual programmes. It was launched in 2015 by John Hendricks, the founder of the Discovery Channel, and its library covers science, nature, space, history, technology, travel and true crime, along with its own Curiosity Originals. It suits anyone who likes to learn something while they watch, families looking for factual viewing, and anyone who keeps running out of nature documentaries on the bigger services.

It is available in the UK. Some titles bought in from other broadcasters are geo-blocked, so the library varies slightly by country. When we checked, the website showed prices in US dollars. Its help centre says pricing is also offered in GBP for members outside the US, so check the currency at checkout. You can watch in a web browser or on apps for Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV, Android TV, iPhone, iPad, Android phones, Xbox One and several smart TV brands.

What's worth a look

• Standard monthly plan: the full documentary library, with downloads and streaming on more than one screen. Currently $5.99 a month (prices can change), and you can cancel any time.
• Standard annual plan: currently shown at $24.99 billed once a year, down from $49.99. That works out at around $2.09 a month.
• Smart Bundle annual plan: adds Tastemade (food and travel), Somm TV (wine), Curiosity University (lectures) and Kidstream (children's programmes). Currently shown at $39.99 a year, down from $79.99; the monthly Smart Bundle is $11.99.
• Gift cards: a year of Standard for $49.99 or a year of the Smart Bundle for $79.99, sent by email on the date you choose.

Prices are plus any applicable taxes, and annual payments can't be refunded once they've gone through.

How to save more

• If you'll watch for more than a few months, go annual. At the prices shown, a year of Standard cost about the same as four or five months on the monthly plan.
• Look at the Smart Bundle if anyone at home would use Tastemade or Kidstream. The annual bundle was only $15 more than annual Standard when we checked.
• Sign up on the website rather than through an app store if you want to manage the plan yourself. App store subscriptions are billed and cancelled through Apple, Google, Roku or Amazon instead.
