GI Cognition is a London company, set up in 2016 and led by Dr Jafar Jafari, that provides gut physiology testing. Alongside its London clinic and its work with hospitals, it sells Gut Insights home breath test kits online. These suit people whose GP, consultant or dietitian has suggested a specific breath test and who would rather collect the samples at home than travel to a clinic.

The process is straightforward. You order the kit online and it is posted to you. You follow the instructions to collect breath samples at home, then send them back to the company's UK laboratory. The results are reviewed by its specialist team and sent to you by email, and you can book a consultation if you want to go through them. Some tests need preparation such as dietary changes beforehand, so read the instructions on each product page before you order.

Besides home kits, the London clinic offers in-person tests that need specialist equipment, such as oesophageal manometry and 24-hour reflux monitoring. The company also supplies mobile testing services to hospitals and clinics and writes diagnostic reports for other clinicians and laboratories, so the home kits are only one part of what it does.
