hidemy.name VPN: plans, free trial and how the pricing works

hidemy.name is a VPN service that has been running since 2006. Instead of signing up for an account, you buy an access code, type it into the app and connect. One code covers up to five devices at once, and the service has servers in 42 countries. It suits anyone who wants a VPN for public Wi-Fi, travel or home devices without handing over much personal information at sign-up.

One thing to know before you start: prices are in US dollars, so a UK card will be charged in dollars and your bank may add a foreign transaction fee.

What's worth a look

• Free 24-hour trial: currently $0. Request a code and test the apps and server speeds from where you live before you pay anything.
• One-month plan: currently $11. Handy for a single trip abroad, though it's the most expensive way to pay per month.
• One-year plan: currently $48, which works out at $4 a month. The site marks this as its most popular plan.
• Two-, three- and five-year plans: currently $72, $86 and $120. The five-year plan comes to $2 a month if you're sure you'll keep using it.
• Router set-up: guides for running the VPN on your router so that games consoles and smart TVs can use it too.

Apps are available for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and Linux. You can also add a personal IP address at checkout, which is only used by you.

How buying works

Pick a plan on the order page, choose how many accounts you need and whether to add a personal IP address, then pay by bank card, PayPal or one of several cryptocurrencies. You can also pay inside the iOS app. Your access code arrives by email and works in any of the hidemy.name apps, so you can use the same code on your laptop, phone and tablet. There's no limit on how long you can keep an unused code, and you can buy several in advance.

The service says it doesn't cap traffic or speed, though actual speeds depend on your own connection and the distance to the server. Support is through a contact form and a live chat button when an operator is online.

Current offers

• Free 24-hour VPN trial with no registration.
• Save 50% on the one-year plan ($48) compared with paying monthly.
• Save 75% on the five-year plan ($120) compared with paying monthly.
• 30-day money-back guarantee on plans of 30 days or more, subject to conditions.

The order page also has a box for a promo code if you have one.

How to save more

• Your subscription time starts when you first activate the code, not when you buy it. That means you can buy a longer, cheaper-per-month plan now and start it when you need it.
• Check the refund rules before you pay. Refunds without a stated reason are limited to 5GB of total traffic, and some payment methods have fees deducted; the page says PayPal fees are not.
• Plans renew automatically at the renewal price, so note your renewal date and contact support if you want to cancel.
