NordVPN is one of the longer-running VPN services, set up in 2012 by a group of friends from Lithuania and now developed by Nord Security, which also makes the NordPass password manager. A VPN encrypts your internet connection and routes it through another server, which hides your IP address from the websites you visit and makes public Wi-Fi in cafés, hotels and stations safer to use. You can also choose which country your connection appears to come from.

There are apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Android TV and Apple TV, and a single account can be connected on up to 10 devices at the same time, or more if you set it up on your router. It suits anyone who regularly uses public Wi-Fi, travels, or simply wants more privacy at home across a household's phones and laptops.

What's worth a look

NordVPN sells four tiers on 1-month, 1-year and 2-year terms. Its own pricing guide lists them in US dollars; UK visitors see pound prices on the pricing page, but NordVPN says most charges are taken in dollars, so your card may add a small foreign transaction fee.

  • Basic: the VPN on its own, currently listed at $2.99 a month on a 2-year plan, or $12.99 on a rolling 1-month plan.
  • Plus: currently $3.89 a month on a 2-year plan, adding more of Nord's security tools to the VPN.
  • Complete: currently $4.89 a month on a 2-year plan, a bigger bundle of Nord Security services.
  • Prime: currently $6.89 a month on a 2-year plan, the top tier.

Prices can change, and the 1-year and 2-year plans are paid upfront. The NordVPN plans guide sets out what each tier includes.

Current offers

  • The 2-year plans have come with three extra months included, so you get 27 months for the upfront price.
  • NordVPN advertises a 7-day free trial; check the page for which devices it applies to.
  • Students and apprentices aged 18 to 26 can get an extra discount.
  • Refer a friend and you can receive a free month of NordVPN.
  • The NordVPN coupon page lists the month's special deal.

How to save more

  • If you know you will keep a VPN, the 2-year plan has the lowest monthly price by a wide margin compared with paying month by month.
  • Every new subscription is covered by a 30-day money-back guarantee, which you can claim from your Nord Account. It only covers the first payment, not renewals, so note your renewal date.
  • NordVPN runs Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals each year, so it can pay to wait until late November if you are not in a hurry.
