Tuff Spot: play trays, stands and play sand for messy play

Tuff Spot is a specialist shop for play trays: the big, shallow plastic trays that nurseries, childminders and parents fill with sand, water, pasta, leaves or small toys for messy and sensory play. It is run by Anything 4 Home Ltd, a business in Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent, and the site says it has been selling play trays for 11 years.

The range is short rather than sprawling, which makes it easy to choose. It suits families with toddlers and young children, and early years settings that want a contained, wipe-clean area for play indoors or in the garden. The manufacturer's suggested age for the tray and stand set is 3 to 10 years. The trays are waterproof and wipe clean, and the site has assembly guides and a YouTube page if you need help putting the stand together. Questions can go to the team by phone on 020 3600 0336 or through the contact form.

What's worth a look

• The 60cm round play tray with height-adjustable stand is currently £36.99. The tubular steel stand sets to 41cm, 50cm or 59cm, so it can grow with your child, and comes with tools and instructions. Colours include black, orange, pink, sky blue and white.
• The 100cm round sand and water tray on its own is currently £22.99, a good size for two or three children to share on the floor or a garden table.
• The 70cm round tray is currently £21.99 if you're short on space.
• The Simpa large rectangular deep sand pit tray is currently £14.99, the cheapest way into the range, with deeper sides for sand play.
• A 20kg bag of children's play sand is currently £16.99, described as non-toxic and non-staining.

How to save more

• Order a tray and a bag of sand together so you only pay delivery once.
• If you already have a sturdy low table or plan to use the tray on the floor, the tray-only options save around £14 compared with the tray and stand set.
• Browse the free creative play ideas and gallery pages before buying extra kit. Many set-ups use dry pasta, leaves, water and toys you already own.
