Vintage Wine Gifts is a wine merchant based in Acton, west London, that has been selling bottles from specific years since 1989. The idea is simple: find a wine, port or spirit from the year someone was born, married or started something important, and send it to them as a gift. It suits anyone shopping for a milestone birthday or anniversary who wants something more personal than a bottle picked off a supermarket shelf.

You can search by year, region, type of drink or price band, and there are ready-made sections for 25th, 30th, 40th and 50th anniversaries, as well as weddings and christenings. Standard bottles arrive in a silk-lined wooden box with a printed gift card carrying your message, tasting and storage notes and a vintage chart.

What's worth a look

• 1976 Barbaresco Riserva Speciale from Cantina del Castello Feudale is currently £129.77, one of the shop's best sellers for 50th birthdays and anniversaries this year.
• 1966 Chateau Chene Liege Pomerol is currently £169.97, a red Bordeaux from a year that will mean something to anyone turning 60.
• Taylor Fladgate 70 years of Port wooden box is currently £169.97. It holds four half-size bottles of aged tawny port and is pitched at 70th celebrations.
• 1996 Delord Freres Bas Armagnac (50cl) is currently £99.97, a good option for a 30th if the recipient prefers spirits to wine.
• 2006 Gigondas from Moulin de la Gardette is currently £69.97, a Southern Rhone red for a 20th anniversary or birthday.

For very old years, look at the decanted selection. On the 1976 page, for example, a 20cl bottle of 1976 Taylor's Late Bottled Vintage Port is listed at £69.97. Prices can change, and each bottle is limited stock.

• The shop promises to refund the difference if you find the identical bottle cheaper within seven days of ordering, after allowing £17.99 for the box and accessories.
