Black Bee Honey bottles honey from British beekeepers and keeps each batch separate, so a jar tells you the season, the place and the person who produced it. It's run from Shepton Mallet in Somerset, it's a certified B Corp, and it puts 2% of turnover into creating wildflower meadows with the charity Plantlife. If you like knowing where your food comes from, or you want a food gift that feels a bit more thoughtful than a supermarket jar, it's a good place to start.
Most jars are 227g. You can also buy 1kg and 3kg tubs if honey is a daily staple in your house, and there are gift boxes, candles and prints too. The company points out that most honey sold in the UK is imported and blended, which is the gap it sets out to fill.
What's worth a look
- Raw British Set Spring Honey, currently £7.50. A set honey from spring blossom that spreads nicely on toast without dripping.
- Raw British Autumn Heather Honey, currently £8.50. Heather honey has a stronger, deeper flavour than summer honey and works well in porridge or with cheese.
- Raw British Hot Honey (medium), currently £8.50. British wildflower honey mixed with habanero chilli, for drizzling over pizza, halloumi or roast veg. There's also a 280g squeezy bottle at £9.95.
- The Large Honey Jar Gift Box, currently £32.95. Four 227g jars covering spring, summer, autumn and winter, so you can taste how the flavour changes through the year.
- Raw British Summer Honey 1kg Small Tub, currently £29.95. Worth considering if you bake with honey or get through a jar a week.
Prices can change, and limited releases such as the seaside and Christmas honeys sell out, so check the product page before you plan around one.
