byMATTER is a clothing and shoe care brand founded by Holly Gardner and registered in London in 2020. Instead of a long list of laundry products, it sells a short range of sprays and wardrobe helpers: something to freshen clothes between washes, something for tired trainers, something to keep moths away and, most recently, a spray that relaxes creases without heat. UK orders are sent from a warehouse in Dorset.

It suits people who own knitwear, wool coats or good shirts and would rather wash them less often, and anyone who travels a lot and wants to look pressed without packing a travel iron. The products are described as plant-based, vegan and cruelty free, and the packaging is recyclable. Prices sit at the premium end for laundry care, so it pays to know how the savings work.

The sprays come in recyclable glass bottles, and the scents lean towards perfume rather than the usual laundry-aisle smell. Liquid Iron, for example, uses sandalwood, palo santo and pink pepper. If you prefer to try things in a shop first, byMATTER is stocked by a few independents, including Provision Store in Bermondsey, London.

What's worth a look

  • Liquid Iron, currently £25 for a 90ml bottle. It is designed for cotton shirts: spray, smooth by hand and let the fabric dry. byMATTER says it works best on natural fibres and is better for freshening than crease removal on dense synthetics.
  • Another Day fabric freshener, currently £35. The bestseller, meant for coats, knits and denim that you don't want to wash after every wear.
  • Another Step shoe deodoriser, currently £35. A spray for trainers and boots that aims to neutralise odour rather than cover it up.
  • Closet Guardian moth repellent, currently £29. A scented alternative to mothballs for wardrobes and drawers holding wool and cashmere.
  • Travel Duo, currently £34. 10ml minis of Another Day and Another Step, handy for weekends away or a gym bag.
  • Closet Kit, currently £60. Another Day and a Closet Guardian set together, for anyone who wants to look after a whole wardrobe.
  • Ergonomic Brush, currently £15. A clothes brush for lifting lint and dust off coats and knitwear.

Current offers

  • Build your own bundle: pick any three products in the bundle builder on the homepage and save 20%.

How to save more

  • Three full-size items will usually take you past £70, so a bundle of three gets you both the 20% saving and free delivery.
  • If you are unsure about a scent, start with the Travel Duo before buying full-size bottles.
  • Only subscribe to something you use often; the saving is good, but the first two deliveries are a commitment.
  • Kits are already grouped, so compare a kit's price with three items in the bundle builder to see which works out cheaper for what you want.
