Cold Town Beer is an Edinburgh craft brewery that takes its name from Calton Hill, once known as Caltoun, or Cold Town. Its brewery sits just off Leith Walk, and its beers pour in bars across Scotland as well as at Cold Town House on the Grassmarket. The online shop sends cans, mini kegs and merchandise to addresses across mainland UK, so it suits anyone who likes a crisp lager or a hoppy IPA and wants it delivered rather than carried home from the supermarket.

The way the range is built is worth knowing. New beers are brewed in small batches and tried on draught first. If drinkers take to them, they stay; if they sell well, they get canned and land in the shop. That means the canned line-up is the beers that have already proved popular in the pub. Most of the range comes in 12-packs of 440ml cans, and the product pages list ABV, hops, malts and allergens, which is handy if you are buying for someone with particular tastes. Several of the beers, including the core lager and Doddie Beir, are marked as vegan-friendly.

What's worth a look

  • Crisp Craft Lager: the brewery's 4% core lager, fermented slower and colder for a clean finish. A 12-pack of 440ml cans is currently £28.80.
  • Peachy Lager: a pale 4% lager with a peach aroma, made with natural peach flavouring. The 12 x 440ml pack is currently £21.20, down from £31.20.
  • AF Hopped Lager: an alcohol-free (under 0.5%) hopped lager using Cascade, Azacca and Citra hops, with tropical and citrus notes. A 12 x 440ml pack is currently £25.20.
  • Mini Keg: a 5-litre keg of Cold Town Lager or Baltic IPA, good for roughly 7 to 9 pints, currently £30. Kegs are made to order, so allow about a week.
  • Build Your Own 12 Pack: pick your own mix of cans, currently from £21.24 to £71.40 depending on what you choose.

There is also a Doddie Beir 12-pack at £38.40, a hop-forward 4.3% pilsner, and a barrel-aged imperial stout for special occasions.

  • Edinburgh locals can order online and pick up from The Black Bull on the Grassmarket with Click 'Can' Collect; give 72 hours' notice and bring ID.
