Create is a website builder run from Brighton. It began in 2001 as DoYourOwnSite.co.uk, started by Simon Kimber so his clients could update their own sites, and became Create.net in 2009. It's aimed at people who want a decent website or online shop without learning to code: sole traders, crafters, bands, authors, tradespeople and small shops. More than 30,000 people have used it, according to the company.

You choose a template, change it with a drag-and-drop editor and publish. Every plan includes SSL, a blog and hosting that Create says is carbon neutral, with a tree planted every month for each site. Support is UK-based, by email on the smaller plans and with priority on the Business plan.

Shop owners get tools to track and process orders in one place, and on the Business plan can connect their store to Google Shopping, Pinterest, Instagram and Facebook so products show up beyond their own site. There are SEO settings for page titles and descriptions, automatic sitemaps and links to Google Analytics and Search Console for anyone who wants to keep an eye on visitors.

What's worth a look

  • Portfolio plan: up to 10 pages and 3GB of storage, for a simple site with no shop. Currently £8.49 a month billed annually, or £9.99 monthly.

  • Business plan: unlimited pages and products, abandoned basket emails, Instagram and Google Shopping, Klarna and PayPal pay later, and Royal Mail Click & Drop. Currently £33.99 a month billed annually, or £39.99 monthly.
