HSS DIY: hire the heavy kit and buy the materials in one basket

HSS has hired out tools since 1957. Its HSS DIY site lets you hire mixers, sanders and diggers and buy timber, fencing and tools in the same order.

HSS started out in 1957 as The Hire Service Shop, a single shop in Kensington run by Bert Taylor. These days it trades online as HSS DIY, and the idea is simple: hire the tools that are too big, too pricey or too rarely needed to own, and buy the materials for the same job from the same site. You can add a concrete mixer and a pallet of sand to one basket, check out once, and either have it delivered or pick it up from a branch.

It suits home improvers tackling a patio, fence, kitchen or loft, as well as tradespeople who need an extra breaker or access tower for a week. The about page is clear that you don't need to be a professional to hire, and a live chat team is on hand on weekdays if you're unsure which size of machine the job needs. Prices are shown with VAT and also without it, which helps if you're buying for a business.

What's worth a look

  • Petrol tip-up concrete mixer: mixes up to 85 litres of concrete or mortar and tips straight into a wheelbarrow. Hire is currently from £28.36 including VAT. Petrol isn't supplied, and you'll need at least an estate car to collect it.
  • 6ft x 6ft lap fence panel: a standard garden fence panel, currently £25.92 each, with matching posts and closeboard panels listed alongside.
  • Megastep podium stepladder: a platform ladder with a guarded top for longer jobs at height, currently £508.79 for the 6-tread version, with an 8-tread option too.
  • Rechargeable floodlight with tripod: a cordless work light for garages, sheds and dark evenings outdoors, currently £53.95.
  • Digger hire: mini diggers and excavators for landscaping and groundwork, with prices shown once you choose your dates.

Prices can change, so check the product page before you order.

Current offers

  • 25% off hire of the petrol tip-up concrete mixer, now from £28.36 instead of £37.80.
  • Free delivery on more than 1,000 hire and buy products, with free same-day delivery available on some items.
  • Reduced prices in the Top Deals section, including the Megastep podium stepladder at £508.79 (was £598.57), the rechargeable floodlight at £53.95 (was £59.94) and 6ft lap fence panels at £25.92 (was £28.80).

How to save more

  • Plan the hire around the job. The mixer page shows an average hire of six days, so get materials delivered first and start the hire when you're ready to use it.
  • Collect if you can. One-hour click and collect from a branch saves waiting for a delivery slot, but check the vehicle size the product page asks for.
  • Check before you return. If you change your mind about a purchase you pay the return postage, so measure up and check the size before you order.
