Macian is a women's footwear label with a simple idea: make fewer shoes, make them properly, and keep them going for years. The founder, Silvia Olcese, grew up in Liguria in northern Italy, and her designs bring a little Italian softness to classic English shapes. Every pair is made in Northamptonshire, the county that has been the centre of English shoemaking for centuries.

The shoes are Goodyear welted, a slower construction method where the sole is stitched to a strip of leather rather than glued straight to the upper. In practice that means a cobbler can take the sole off and fit a new one, so a pair can outlast several sets of soles. Macian uses Vibram and Dainite rubber soles, which are lighter and grippier on wet pavements than plain leather.

It's a luxury price point, so Macian suits someone who wants one or two pairs of good shoes for work and weekends rather than a new pair every season.

• Miranda Chelsea Boots in black, currently £550. Black calf leather, fully leather-lined, on a lightweight Vibram sole. The kind of boot that works with jeans or tailoring. There's also a dark chocolate version at the same price.

• Alice Ankle Boots in dark chocolate, currently £550. Polished calf leather and an ultra-light Vibram sole, with Goodyear welting so they can be resoled later.
• Ludo Penny Loafer, currently £495, in black, silver or midnight navy. The silver pair is the most unusual piece in the range.

Macian doesn't run constant sales, but its standard terms are worth knowing:

• Free delivery to the UK and EU on every order. Orders placed by 2pm on a weekday usually leave the same day.
• Free UK returns. Tell them within 14 days of delivery and they'll send a prepaid label. Shoes must be unworn and in their original packaging.

Sale items, when there are any, are final sale and can't be returned, so it's worth being sure of your size first.

How to save more

• Order two sizes if you're between them. With free UK delivery and a free return label, sending one pair back costs you nothing.
• Repair rather than replace. Macian's aftercare service, run with the repair platform CICON for UK customers, matches you with a cobbler for resoling and repairs. It also takes other premium footwear.
