Surfshark started in 2018 as a VPN provider and now sells a wider set of online security tools under one subscription. It is run from Amsterdam and, since 2022, has been part of the same group as NordVPN, though the two services are still sold separately. The main appeal for families is that a single account covers an unlimited number of devices, so phones, laptops, tablets and the TV in the living room can all use it without paying per device.
It suits anyone who uses public Wi-Fi regularly, wants to cut down on ads and trackers, or would like to keep their real email address off sign-up forms. UK prices are shown in pounds on the pricing page, with VAT added at checkout.
What's worth a look
- Surfshark Starter, currently £1.79 a month on the 24-month plan. This is the entry plan: the VPN with ad and cookie pop-up blocking, split tunnelling for apps such as mobile banking, and Alternative ID for masked email addresses.
- Surfshark One, currently £1.99 a month on the 24-month plan. It adds antivirus with scheduled scans and webcam protection, plus Alert, which tells you if your email or card details turn up in a data leak.
- Surfshark One+, currently £3.29 a month on the 24-month plan. On top of everything in One, it includes Incogni, which asks data brokers to remove your personal details.
- The VPN itself runs on more than 4,500 RAM-only servers in 100 countries, according to Surfshark, and has apps for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and smart TVs.
Prices can change, and the monthly figures above are for the first term of the longest plan.
Current offers
- Starter on the 24-month plan comes with 3 extra months, at £48.33 for the first 27 months (Surfshark shows this as 85% off).
- One on the 24-month plan also includes 3 extra months, at £53.73 for the first 27 months.
- One+ on the 24-month plan is £88.83 for the first 27 months, again with 3 extra months.
- Students can get a separate discount by verifying through Student Beans, as explained on Surfshark's student discount page.
- All plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee on the first purchase.
How to save more
- Go for the longest plan if you know you'll use it: the monthly cost is far lower than paying month by month, and the 3 bonus months are included.
- Start with Starter unless you need antivirus or leak alerts. You can compare what each tier adds on the deals page before paying for extras you may not use.
- Use the 30-day guarantee to test speeds and streaming on your own devices, and cancel within the window if it doesn't suit you.
