The Sleep People makes and sells mattresses from its base in Ossett, West Yorkshire. The company says it formed in 2014 when two mattress businesses merged, and it now sells several of its own brands side by side, including Starlight Beds, Extreme Comfort, The Foam People and the more upmarket Hargreave and Flynn. That makes it a useful stop if you want to compare a lot of mattresses at different prices in one place.

It suits anyone furnishing a bedroom on a budget, landlords and parents kitting out a student flat, and caravan owners who need an odd size. There are also custom-size and European-size mattresses, which can be hard to find elsewhere. Many mattresses are vacuum-packed and rolled, so they are easier to carry upstairs.

• Elevate Your Sleep 25cm hybrid mattress: pocket springs with a memory foam layer, three-zone support and reinforced edges. The single is currently £96.04 (down from £112.99) and the double £152.99, though prices can change.
