Tinkerer, also called Tinkerer STEAM Box, sends children a new box of hands-on projects every month. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, arts and maths, and each box is built around a theme, from catapults and coin sorters to light, sound and simple machines. In the UK it is run by Tinkererbox UK Limited, which is registered in London.

It suits parents and grandparents looking for screen-free activities that a child can build, play with and keep. The projects are designed so children can follow the instructions themselves as they get older, though younger ones will want an adult nearby.

What's worth a look

  • Wonder Box (ages 3 to 5): two or three craft and play projects per box, an activity book and, in some boxes, a phonics picture book. Themes have included farms, sink or float and animal bowling.
  • Odyssey Box (ages 6 to 8): projects about light, sound, forces and simple engineering, such as an air cannon, a solar oven or a basketball catapult.
  • Explore Box (ages 9 to 12): more involved engineering and science builds, with past topics including a crane, a printing press, a movie projector and a synthesiser.
  • Subscription plans: the monthly plan is currently £28 a box, against a listed retail price of £29.99. Six months prepaid is currently £137.88 and 12 months £239.88, though prices can change.
  • Gift cards and gift subscriptions: an option if you are buying for a child in another household.

Current offers

  • The 30-day trial lets you try the first box for £14.99, against the £29.99 retail price. If you do not cancel, the subscription continues on the plan you picked.
  • Prepaying for 12 months works out at about £19.99 a box, which is the lowest per-box price among the standard plans.
  • The UK shipping page lists a free standard delivery option. Some postcodes in the Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and the Isle of Wight pay extra.

How to save more

  • Start with the trial before committing. It is the cheapest way to see whether your child enjoys the projects.
  • Choose the longest plan you are happy with. Twelve months prepaid costs about £8 less per box than paying monthly.
  • Set a reminder before your billing date. The terms say you need to cancel future orders before the next charge if you only want the trial.

Subscriptions can be paused, switched or cancelled from your account. If you want a one-off gift rather than an ongoing plan, look at the gift subscription and gift card options before signing up to a recurring plan.
