Umthi is a small natural beauty brand that makes hair, face and body care in London. Its founder, Lolita, is a South African aromatherapist and herbalist, and the range draws on plant know-how handed down through her family in Makhanda. Every hair product starts with a tea brewed from six botanicals, including amla, hibiscus, marshmallow root and rose, before any butters or oils go in. The formulas contain no microplastics, and the brand says they suit every hair type, from straight to coily.
It's worth a look if you like plant-based products made in small batches, want something for curly or afro hair that also works for the rest of the household, or are looking for a gift set that feels more personal than what's on the high street.
What's worth a look
- Botanical Brew Restorative Shampoo: a sulphate-free shampoo built on the brand's brewed botanical tea. It's currently £28 as a one-off, or £23.80 a month on subscription.
- Botanical Brew Restorative Leave-in Cream: a 250ml leave-in that won a gold award in 2024. It's currently £30, or £25.50 a month on the monthly plan.
- Hair & Body Butter: a 100ml whipped blend of shea, argan and mango butters with no added water. You can use it to seal moisture into hair, as a body butter or to take off make-up. It's currently £20.
- Nourishing Camellia Body Lotion: made with chamomile hydrosol rather than plain water, plus camellia oil and shea butter, and scented with rose geranium and litsea. It's currently £21.
- The Umthi Rose & Jasmine Face Ritual: the face oil and face cream together, both in violet glass. It's currently £85 and makes a good gift.
