W Hamond has been selling jewellery from the same shop on Church Street in Whitby since 1860, and calls itself the Original Whitby Jet Shop. The town's jet trade grew in Victorian times, when the stone became fashionable for mourning jewellery. Whitby Jet is a black gemstone found on the North Yorkshire coast, and W Hamond still sources and works it for its own collections. There is a second shop on the Shambles in York, and the business is part of CW Sellors Group, with sister shops in Ashbourne, Bakewell and Matlock.
The website suits anyone after a piece of jewellery with a Yorkshire story, whether that is a gift, a souvenir of a visit to Whitby or a gothic-style necklace. Alongside jet, it sells Derbyshire Blue John, designer brands including Clogau, Georg Jensen and Fabergé, engagement and wedding rings, and watches.
