Xplora makes smartwatches and first phones for children who are old enough to head out on their own but not ready for a full smartphone. Kids can call and message approved contacts, and parents can see where they are, but there is no web browser, no app store and no social media. The company started in Oslo after its founder's young son went missing for half an hour in a shopping centre, and the UK shop sells direct to families here.
It suits parents of primary-age children who want a way to keep in touch on the walk to school or at the park, and older children moving towards a phone in stages. Everything is managed through the Xplora app, where you choose contacts, set safe zones and switch on a school mode that blocks calls in class while keeping the SOS button working.
What's worth a look
- XGO3 Kids Smartwatch, currently £139. The entry watch, with GPS, calls, voice messages, a step counter and an SOS button, in three animal-themed colourways.
- X6Play Kids Smartwatch, currently £179. A step up, with a faster processor, a 5MP camera and swappable coloured frames so children can change the look.
- XploraOne, from £149. A starter phone with calls, messages and GPS, but no internet or apps, for children who want something that looks more like a phone.
- HMD Fusion X1, currently £175. A smartphone made with HMD where parents decide which features to unlock as their child gets older.
- Dream Watch Strap Pack, currently £29.99. A set of straps for children who like to swap colours, and cheaper than buying single straps at £19.99 each.
Prices can change, so check the product page before you buy. Most devices need an Xplora Connect SIM and parental controls plan, which is charged separately.
Current offers
- The HMD Fusion X1 was showing at £175, down from £229, a saving of £54.
- Up to 50% off accessories, including selected straps, chargers and screen protectors.
- Parental controls and SIM from £9.99 a month on the 24-month plan, compared with £11.99 a month on pay monthly or £125.88 upfront for 12 months.
How to save more
- Add the plan cost to the device price when comparing models; over two years the plan can cost more than the watch.
- If you are confident your child will use the watch for a while, the 24-month plan is the cheapest monthly option on the site.
- You have 30 days to change your mind rather than the usual 14, which gives you time to check the watch suits your child.
