Trainline is a ticket retailer for trains and coaches across the UK and Europe, selling tickets for most operators through one website and app. It suits commuters, students, families and anyone planning a rail trip abroad who'd rather search and pay in one place. As well as tickets, it sells digital Railcards and has tools for finding cheaper fares.

What's worth a look

  • Digital Railcards: most 1-year Railcards are currently £35, and the Disabled Persons Railcard is £20. They generally give 1/3 off eligible fares. The 16-25, Family & Friends and Senior Railcards also come as 3-year cards at £80, which Trainline says saves £25. Prices can change.
  • SplitSave split tickets: Trainline checks whether buying several tickets for one journey works out cheaper. It says the average saving is £13 per trip, and often you don't even need to change trains. Worth trying on any longer journey.
  • London to Edinburgh: the homepage fare finder currently shows tickets from £27.80. It suits anyone planning an autumn city break in Scotland who can be flexible on times.
  • London to Paris: currently shown from £39. If you'd rather not fly, Trainline also sells Eurostar and European operators' tickets.
  • GroupSave: groups of 3 to 9 travelling together can save up to 1/3 on eligible fares. It's handy for days out with friends.

"From" fares are the cheapest the site found and depend on date, time and availability.

Trainline also sells season tickets, Flexi Season tickets for part-time commuters, and coach tickets, and it will suggest a coach if one is available for your route. If you're heading to Europe, routes such as Madrid to Barcelona are shown from £8.23 on the homepage fare finder, and you can book French, Italian, Spanish and German operators in the same app as your UK tickets.
