Highland Broadband is an Edinburgh-based provider that builds its own full-fibre network in rural Scotland. It started in 2015 as Lothian Broadband, offering wireless broadband, and now lays fibre to towns and villages in Argyll, Fife, the Highlands, the Lothians, Moray and Stirlingshire, often where the bigger networks haven't reached. It suits households and home workers in those areas who want fast, reliable broadband, especially anyone who uploads a lot, as every plan has the same upload and download speed.
Because it only serves the places it has built to, the first step is its availability checker.
What's worth a look
All four home plans include unlimited data, installation, a Wi-Fi router and 24/7 network monitoring. Prices below are the current offer prices for new customers on a 24-month contract, and each plan rises by £4 every April from 2027.
- Essential 150: currently £24.99 a month (normally £39.99). 150Mbps both ways with a Wi-Fi 6 router. Enough for a couple or small household that streams and makes video calls.
- Everyday 500: currently £29.99 a month (normally £54.99). 500Mbps both ways, which suits busier homes with several people streaming, gaming or working from home at once.
- Family 1000: currently £34.99 a month (normally £79.99). 1Gbps both ways, plus the Whole Home Wi-Fi Guarantee, parental controls and cyber security built in. Useful in larger or thick-walled houses where one router doesn't reach every room.
- Ultimate 5000: currently £39.99 a month (normally £99.99). 5Gbps both ways with a Wi-Fi 7 router and the same extras as Family 1000. One for heavy users moving very large files.
- Calls add-on: £10 a month for unlimited UK landline and mobile calls, with number porting for a one-off £12. The company points out it may not suit you if you rely on a landline for a care alarm.
Current offers
- Switching credit: up to 12 months of your new contract covered to offset your old provider's early termination charge. New customers on 24-month contracts only, capped by package, with proof of the charge needed.
- £0 cancellation fees in your first six months, plus a 28-day cooling-off period.
- Free premium installation, which the company values at £50, on every home plan.
- Refer a friend: a £50 Amazon, M&S or Tesco voucher for each friend you refer once they're installed, with no limit on referrals. Your friend also gets a reward that depends on their package.
- A 100Mbps social tariff at £23.99 a month for people on means-tested benefits.
How to save more
- If you're still in contract elsewhere, get your early termination charge in writing before you switch, so you can claim the switching credit.
- Compare the plans with the extras in mind. The Wi-Fi guarantee is a £5 a month add-on on the two cheaper plans, so Everyday 500 with the add-on costs the same as Family 1000, which includes it alongside faster speeds.
- Once you're connected, share your referral link with neighbours. The network is built village by village, so people nearby are the ones most likely to be able to sign up.
