Kijou makes monthly STEM subscription boxes: each one is a themed science, engineering or craft project with all the parts, instructions and a magazine in the box. In the UK the shop is branded Tinkerer, and visitors to kijoubox.com are sent to its UK site, which prices everything in pounds. It suits parents and grandparents looking for screen-free projects that a child can build and then actually play with.

There are three lines by age. Wonder is for ages 3 to 5, with playful early-years maths and science. Odyssey is for ages 6 to 8, mixing science and art. Explore is for ages 9 to 12, with more involved engineering builds. You can switch line at any time, and past boxes can be bought one at a time from the shop.

What's worth a look

Here are five single boxes from the UK shop and the Explore subscription, with today's prices.

The Water Blaster is a good example of how the boxes work. Children build a wooden water blaster and a balloon pumping station, then use them to learn how one-way valves control water and air. For younger children, Pizza Maths turns play dough pizzas into a gentle introduction to counting and fractions.

If you'd rather have a new box every month, subscriptions are £28 on the monthly plan. Paying for six or twelve months up front brings the cost per box down.

New subscriptions are dispatched within three working days, and prepaid plans then arrive in the second half of each month. Most boxes only need a few household bits, such as scissors and water for the Water Blaster. There are gift subscriptions and e-gift cards, which work well for grandparents who'd like to send something every month without guessing at toys. The boxes are designed by a team of educators, designers, scientists and artists, and the range has won an Academics' Choice Award in the US.
