CityPASS has been bundling attraction tickets for North American city breaks since 1997, when two friends started the company in Idaho. The idea is simple: rather than paying at the gate for each observation deck, museum and harbour cruise, you buy one pass that covers a city's headline sights for less. It now covers 17 destinations, from New York, Boston and Chicago to San Francisco, Seattle, Orlando and Toronto, and suits families and first-time visitors who want to tick off the big names without overpaying.

A word on currency for UK buyers: prices are shown in US dollars (Toronto passes are listed in US$ plus tax), so your card provider will convert the payment. Tickets arrive on your phone, and most passes are valid for nine consecutive days from the first one you use.

What's worth a look

Here are some of the most popular passes, with adult prices as shown on the site today.

The New York CityPASS is the company's bestseller: $149 for an adult lets you pick five attractions from a list that includes the Empire State Building, the American Museum of Natural History, Top of the Rock, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and the Statue of Liberty grounds and Ellis Island. If you are only in town for a couple of days, the New York C3 covers any three attractions for $109. In Chicago, the pass includes Shedd Aquarium and Skydeck Chicago with its glass Ledge, plus three more of your choosing, such as an architecture river cruise or the Field Museum.

Many attractions ask you to reserve a time slot once you have your pass, and the My CityPASS app keeps those bookings, entry details and maps in one place.

Current offers

We don't have any CityPASS codes in our list at the moment, and CityPASS itself says on its discounts page that it doesn't post codes on third-party sites. The saving is built into the passes instead:

  • New York CityPASS: save up to 51% on five attractions compared with gate prices.
  • Chicago CityPASS: save up to 50% on five attractions.
  • Boston and San Francisco CityPASS: save up to 45% on four attractions each.

Some passes add a $2 processing fee per ticket, which is shown before you buy.

How to save more

  • Use the comparison pages (for example New York's) to match a pass to the sights you actually want. If you'd only use three attractions, the C3 is cheaper than the five-attraction pass.
  • Pay with a card that has no foreign transaction fee, because prices are charged in US dollars.
  • Check the age bands before you buy child tickets: they differ by city (for example, child prices run from 6 to 17 in New York but 3 to 11 in Boston and Chicago).
