FastestVPN is a VPN service: you install its app, tap connect, and your internet traffic is encrypted and sent through one of its servers. That's useful on public Wi-Fi in cafes, hotels, trains and airports, where you can't be sure who else is on the network. It covers Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android and Fire TV, plus browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Edge, and lets you connect up to 10 devices at once.

It suits households who want one VPN across lots of devices, and anyone who'd rather pay once than take on another monthly subscription. FastestVPN's big selling point is a lifetime plan. Prices are charged in US dollars, so the amount in pounds depends on your card's exchange rate.

What's worth a look

There are four main ways to buy, all with the same features.

The Lifetime VPN Plan at $40 is the headline offer and includes two years of the FastestPass password manager. If you'd rather not commit, the 1 Year + 1 Year Free plan is $19.95 for two years, which works out at about $0.83 a month. The monthly plan at $5 is really only worth it for a short trip.

The Lifetime VPN Plus Plan costs $5 more than the standard lifetime plan and stretches the password manager from two years to five. If you don't already use a password manager, that's the one to compare, because FastestPass otherwise becomes a separate cost once the bundled period ends. Optional add-ons include extra device logins at $1 each, a dedicated IP address from $1.49 a month and port forwarding at $1.20 a month, but most people won't need any of them.

Every plan includes WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2 protocols, a kill switch that cuts your connection if the VPN drops, an ad blocker and malware protection. Servers are listed in more than 49 countries, including the UK, so you can use your usual British services while you're abroad.

Setting up is simple: choose a plan, enter your email address to create the account, pay, and FastestVPN emails your login details. Then download the app for each device. Support is available 24/7 through live chat and email if anything doesn't connect.
