SamBoat is an online marketplace for boat hire, a bit like a holiday-rental site for boats. It lists more than 50,000 sailboats, catamarans, motorboats, RIBs, canal boats and yachts from private owners and charter firms in over 1,400 destinations. It suits anyone planning a day out on the water during a holiday in Croatia, Greece or the Balearics, groups splitting the cost of a week-long sailing trip, and first-timers who need a skipper or a boat that doesn't require a licence. Two boating fans founded it in France in 2014, and it's now part of the Dream Yacht Charter group. The UK site shows prices in pounds.

Each owner sets their own price, which changes with the season, the boat and the dates. Fuel is often extra and owners set their own deposits, so read each listing carefully before you book.

What's worth a look

Here are six listings from across the site, from a small licence-free boat to a canal barge. The prices are the "from" daily rates shown today.

At the budget end, the little Jugoplastika motorboat in Hvar takes up to five people from £83 a day and doesn't need a licence, though the owner asks that you've handled a boat before. For a slower trip, the Peniche Freycinett barge runs skippered cruises along the Canal du Midi from Carcassonne for up to six guests. If you're browsing by country, the Croatia page alone lists nearly 6,000 boats, and its cheapest daily rates start at around £42.

Current offers

We don't have any SamBoat codes in our list at the moment. On the site itself:

  • The deals page collects boats with owner discounts, and some Croatian yachts are showing up to 45% off on selected dates.
  • A Best Price Guarantee: if you find the same boat for the same dates and port cheaper elsewhere, SamBoat pays the difference (you have to claim before you confirm or within 48 hours).
  • The free SamBoat Club gives you personalised discount coupons after your first booking, a £50 gift card after three bookings and a £100 gift card after eight.

How to save more

  • Try Saturday-to-Saturday dates for catamarans and sailing yachts. That's how most are rented, so you'll see more boats to compare.
  • Check whether fuel and a skipper are included in the price. A cheaper boat that charges both on top can end up costing more.
  • For bookings more than two months ahead, you can spread the cost: bookings over €500 get a payment schedule instead of paying everything at once.
