Chef Akila is a Yorkshire kitchen that cooks Indian curries, biryanis and dals from family recipes, freezes them within minutes and sends them out by courier. The recipes come from Chef Akila herself, who was born in a South Indian village in 1945 and has been cooking for others for more than 60 years. It suits anyone who wants a proper curry night without a takeaway, people who batch-fill the freezer, and households catering for vegans, vegetarians or gluten-free diets, since each has its own collection on the menu.
Most dishes come in a 550g pack that serves two and heats up in under ten minutes. Meals arrive frozen with at least six months on the best-before date, so a bigger order can last for weeks. The kitchen says it uses cold-pressed oils or homemade ghee and freshly ground masalas, with no base gravies, ready-made sauces, artificial colours or preservatives, and the menu runs to 39 regional recipes, from Delhi and Lucknow to Chettinad and the Malabar coast.

If you'd like to try a few things at once, the Chicken Lover's Curry Box at £59 bundles three chicken curries, a biryani, Chicken 65 and ghee rice, and on its own it's enough for free delivery.
