Sim Local: travel eSIMs from the airport SIM specialist

Sim Local has been selling travel SIMs since 2011, when it opened its first shop at Dublin Airport. It now has stores across several Heathrow terminals and at Gatwick, but most people will meet it online, where it sells prepaid eSIM data plans for more than 200 destinations. Instead of paying your network's roaming charges, you buy a plan for where you're going, install it on your phone before you fly and connect when you land. It suits holidaymakers, backpackers and anyone with an unlocked, eSIM-ready phone who wants to know exactly what their data will cost.

Prices can be shown in pounds using the currency switcher at the top of the page, and many plans run on well-known local networks such as Orange in Europe, au by KDDI in Japan and True in Thailand, alongside Sim Local's own multi-network plans.

What's worth a look

Here are some plans for popular trips from the UK, with prices as shown on the site today.

For a week-long city break or a multi-country trip, the Europe Unlimited Data for 7 Days plan covers 36 countries with 5GB a day of high-speed data for £19. If you only need maps and messaging on a fortnight in Spain, a 10GB plan for 30 days is £11.50. Further afield, the Japan plans use au by KDDI, one of the country's big three networks, and a week of unlimited data is £14.50. Turkey plans come with a useful heads-up: because of local restrictions, Sim Local recommends installing and activating the eSIM before you arrive.

Most plans are data only, so you'd make calls over WhatsApp or FaceTime, but some destinations (including the UK and the US) have plans with calls and texts too. Hotspot use is allowed on the plans we looked at.

Current offers

There are no Sim Local codes in our list right now, but the site itself has a few deals running:

• Several plans carry an Autumn Promo badge, including a 10-day unlimited-data Thailand eSIM on True for £10.
• Students can use code STUDENTS15 for 15% off the unlimited UK plans on the student offers page.
• Through Refer a Friend, friends get 20% off their eSIM and you earn £5 for each one who buys.

How to save more

• Check your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM using the compatibility checker before you buy. Unactivated eSIMs can be refunded within 14 days, but activated ones generally can't.
• Compare a fixed-data plan with the unlimited ones. For a short trip where you mostly use maps and messaging, a few gigabytes often costs far less.
• Install the eSIM just before you travel: most plans only start counting days once they connect at your destination.
