About Sim Local
Sim Local started in 2011 with a single shop at Dublin Airport, set up by Irish entrepreneur Killian Whelan, and won its first London Heathrow store a year later. It now runs stores across several Heathrow terminals and at Gatwick, plus vending units and partner counters, and it sells travel eSIMs online and through its own app. The company says it has more than four million customers.
The idea is simple: rather than paying your home network's roaming charges, you buy a prepaid data plan for the country you're visiting and install it on your phone as an eSIM before you go. Many plans run on big local networks such as EE and Three in the UK, Orange in Europe, au by KDDI in Japan and True in Thailand, alongside Sim Local's own multi-network plans. There are data-only bundles from a few days to 90 days, unlimited-data options and, in some destinations, plans with calls, texts and a local number.
Prices can be shown in pounds, euros or dollars using the currency switcher. If you haven't activated an eSIM you can ask for a full refund within 14 days, and support is available around the clock by chat and WhatsApp. Before you buy, it's worth checking that your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM, which you can do with the compatibility checker on the site.
