Trainline is a ticket retailer for trains and coaches across the UK and Europe, selling tickets for most operators through one website and app. It suits commuters, students, families and anyone planning a rail trip abroad who'd rather search and pay in one place. As well as tickets, it sells digital Railcards and has tools for finding cheaper fares.

What's worth a look

Here are a few Trainline options worth a look.

"From" fares are the cheapest the site found and depend on date, time and availability.

Trainline also sells season tickets, Flexi Season tickets for part-time commuters, and coach tickets, and it will suggest a coach if one is available for your route. If you're heading to Europe, routes such as Madrid to Barcelona are shown from £8.23 on the homepage fare finder, and you can book French, Italian, Spanish and German operators in the same app as your UK tickets.

Current offers

  • Save 1/3 on rail fares with a Railcard.
  • Save £25 with a 3-year Railcard (on the types that offer one).
  • 50% off adult fares with the 16-17 Saver, which Trainline notes is now valid past age 18.
  • Split tickets with SplitSave, with an average saving of £13 per trip.
  • Save up to 1/3 with GroupSave for 3 to 9 people.
  • Students save 15% on digital Railcards with Student Beans.

How to save more

  • Book ahead where you can. Trainline says customers save 61% on average by booking in advance, and its Advance Ticket Alert can tell you when cheaper tickets are released.
  • Work out whether a Railcard pays for itself. On £35, a 1/3 discount covers the cost after roughly £105 of eligible fares, and Trainline puts the typical saving at around £167 a year.
  • Students should go through Student Beans first to get 15% off the digital Railcard before buying.
