About Hamleys
Hamleys traces its history back to 1760, when William Hamley opened a toy shop called Noah's Ark on High Holborn in London. It is often described as the world's oldest toy shop and is listed as such by Guinness World Records. The family business became well known in the Victorian era, with royalty and nobility among its customers, and it later held royal warrants.
The best-known branch is the flagship on Regent Street in London's West End, where Hamleys has traded since 1881 and from its current building since 1981. It spreads across seven floors, with a different type of toy on each, from soft toys on the ground floor to games, models, dolls and building sets. It draws millions of visitors a year and gets especially busy in the run-up to Christmas. Hamleys also has a smaller number of other UK shops and franchise stores around the world.
The business has changed hands many times. Since 2019 it has been owned by Reliance Retail, part of India's Reliance Industries. Alongside the shops, hamleys.com sells toys, games and gifts online for delivery across the UK.
