The Macular Society Weekly Lottery is a society lottery run by the Macular Society, the UK charity for people affected by macular disease, the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK. Money raised goes towards the charity's research into treatments and a cure, and towards the free support it offers, including its helpline, local support groups and counselling. The charity was founded in 1987 and is based in Andover, Hampshire.
Playing costs £1 a week per entry, or £2 for two entries. Paid by monthly Direct Debit, that works out at £4.34 a month per line. Each player gets a six-digit lucky number by post within 21 days, and it stays the same every week. The draw takes place every Friday using a random number generator, and there are 100 guaranteed prizes each week: a first prize of £1,000, five prizes of £25 and 94 prizes of £5. Winnings are paid straight into the player's bank account, with a letter to confirm.
The lottery is open to UK residents aged 18 and over. The Macular Disease Society holds Gambling Commission society lottery licences (account number 31189) and works with an external lottery manager to run the draws. Its lottery pages also link to its problem gambling and self-exclusion policies and to the GambleAware helpline.
