FamilyTreeDNA is a genetic genealogy company based in Houston, Texas. It was set up in 2000 by Bennett Greenspan, Max Blankfeld and Jim Warren, after Greenspan hit a dead end researching his own family and found that DNA testing for genealogy wasn't available to the public. It is a division of Gene by Gene, which was bought by the Australian company myDNA in 2021.
Its tests are cheek-swab kits for family history research, not medical tests. Family Finder is an autosomal test for anyone, giving an ethnic origins breakdown and matches with relatives on all sides of the family over roughly the last five generations. The mtFull Sequence test follows the direct maternal line, and the Y-DNA tests (Y-37, Y-111 and Big Y-700) follow the direct paternal line for genetic males. The company keeps separate matching databases for all three, and free Group Projects bring together people researching the same surname or region.
UK customers can order, but prices are shown and charged in US dollars, and kits come from Houston by DHL. Standard international shipping is $9.95 for the first kit, and you pay the return postage for your sample. Matching with other testers is opt-in, set on the Privacy & Sharing page of your account, and so is the separate law-enforcement matching option.
