Warrantywise sells extended warranty plans for used cars, vans, electric cars and classic cars. The idea is simple: once the manufacturer's warranty has ended, a plan contributes towards the cost of mechanical and electrical repairs, so a failed gearbox or turbo is less of a shock. The company has been doing this since 2000, says it has sold more than a million plans, and uses mechanic and TV presenter Edd China as its independent adjudicator if you disagree with a repair decision.

It suits drivers who have bought a car or van outside the dealer warranty and would rather pay a regular amount than face a large one-off garage bill. One thing to understand before you buy: Warrantywise describes its plans as discretionary. Each repair request is assessed individually, payment isn't guaranteed, and the company says its plans are not insurance or a regulated financial product. Read the plan book, and decide for yourself whether it's right for your vehicle.

What's worth a look

Prices depend on your vehicle, its age and mileage, so the site doesn't list them; these are the main plans you can get a quote for.

For cars, the plan levels page sets out what each tier covers. The 04/40 plan, for cars up to four years old and under 40,000 miles, is the widest, adding in-car entertainment and premature failure; the 08/80, 10/100 and 15/150 plans are listed-parts plans, so check the plan book for exactly which parts are included. Every level includes emergency breakdown help, car hire, onward travel and diagnostics, with no compulsory contribution.

Electric car owners have two options: the EV plan for cars up to 15 years and 150,000 miles, where the drive battery can be added as an extra, and EV+, which includes the drive battery for newer, lower-mileage cars. The classic car warranty is built around cherished and modern classics that are often used at weekends rather than every day.

On any plan you can add optional extras during the quote, such as air conditioning, airbag systems, driver assistance, multimedia, emissions failure and MOT failure.

Current offers

We don't have any Warrantywise codes from our affiliate feed at the moment, but the store's own site has these:

  • Public sector workers get 20% off all warranty products with the code SERVICES20, published on the public sector discount page (terms apply).
  • Every plan comes with a 14-day money-back guarantee: cancel within 14 days for a full refund, as long as you haven't asked for a repair contribution.

How to save more

  • Get your quote before the car crosses the next mileage or age band. The plans are set by thresholds such as 60,000 or 80,000 miles, and the level you qualify for affects what's included.
  • Only add the extras you'll actually use. MOT failure cover may suit an older car; multimedia cover is less useful if your car has a basic stereo.
  • Look at the payment options in your quote. You can pay in full, spread the cost over four months or pay monthly, and the FAQs suggest checking the payment schedule before you choose.

You can use your own VAT-registered garage for repairs, but check its labour rate is within the limit on your plan schedule, or the plan may not cover the full bill.
