xtraWine is an online wine shop set up in Italy in 2008 by a group of sommeliers, IT specialists and entrepreneurs. The site is run by WBX Srl from Forlì in Emilia-Romagna, and it has a UK company, xtraWine UK Ltd, with a UK phone number for customers here. It says it ships to 43 countries.
The catalogue runs to more than 10,000 labels. Italian wine is the heart of it, with deep ranges of Brunello di Montalcino, Barolo, Amarone, Chianti Classico, Franciacorta, Prosecco and the white wines of Collio in Friuli, plus Champagne, Bordeaux, Chablis and other French and international wines, spirits such as grappa, olive oil and wine accessories. Product pages list critics' scores from guides such as Robert Parker, James Suckling and Vinous where a wine has them, along with tasting notes and food pairings.
UK prices are shown in pounds and the site says duties and taxes are already included for UK deliveries, so there should be nothing extra to pay on arrival. Shipping is calculated in the basket by destination and goes by UPS, TNT or FedEx in recyclable protective wine boxes, insured against breakage. Bottles usually ship without their original gift boxes. A Promo page gathers current reductions, and a Buy More, Save More range gives bigger savings on 3, 6 or 12 matching bottles. You must be of legal drinking age to buy.
