xtraWine: Italian wine from Brunello to Collio, delivered to the UK in pounds

xtraWine is an Italian online wine merchant founded in 2008 by a group of sommeliers, tech people and entrepreneurs. It's run from Forlì in Emilia-Romagna, has a UK company and UK phone number, and lists more than 10,000 labels. It suits anyone who wants to go deeper into Italian wine than the supermarket shelf allows, from a mid-week Rosso to a cellar-worthy Brunello, and it also stocks Champagne, Bordeaux, Chablis and spirits.

The UK site shows prices in pounds, and xtraWine says duties and taxes are already included for UK deliveries, so there's nothing extra to pay on the doorstep. Wine ships from Italy by UPS, TNT or FedEx in recyclable protective boxes, insured against breakage. The shipping cost is worked out in the basket. Product pages are detailed, with region, grape, food pairings and critics' scores where a wine has them.

What's worth a look

Tuscany is a strong suit. The Vigne Toscane Rosso di Montalcino 2023 at £21 is an easy way into Sangiovese from Montalcino. If you want the real thing for a special meal, Silvio Nardi's Brunello di Montalcino 2019 is £35. Collio, in Friuli on the Slovenian border, is the other highlight. Renato Keber's organic Collio Sauvignon Riserva 2019 is £20.50, down from £23.

It isn't all Italian, either. The menus also cover Champagne and Crémant, Bordeaux, Chablis and Pouilly-Fumé, alongside Prosecco, Franciacorta and Trento DOC sparkling wines. There are alcohol-free wines, Italian olive oil and wine accessories too, which helps if you're putting together a gift or topping up an order.

Current offers

The Promo page collects the current reductions, with the list price crossed out next to the offer price. Today that includes Neret Vely's Blanc de Noirs Champagne at £26 instead of £30, and Marsuret's L'estro Extra Dry Prosecco at £11.10 instead of £12.30.

There's also a Buy More, Save More range, which the site says saves up to 40%. The saving grows as you buy 3, 6 or 12 bottles of the same wine.

How to save more

• Shipping is charged per order, so building a mixed case from the Promo page usually works out better than ordering a single bottle.
• If you've found a wine you love, check whether it's in Buy More, Save More before ordering, as 6 or 12 of the same bottle unlocks the bigger savings.
• Because UK prices already include duties and taxes, compare the final basket total, delivery included, with UK merchants selling the same vintage.
