Airparks has been parking holidaymakers' cars since 1991, when it opened a secure car park near Birmingham Airport. It's part of the Holiday Extras group and runs its own sites for Birmingham, Gatwick and London Luton, with an Express car park at Aberdeen and a new one at Munich. It says more than 750,000 people park with it each year.

The appeal is simple. At most sites you pull into an arrivals bay, check in at reception and hand over your keys. Staff park the car while a free shuttle takes you to the terminal. Receptions are open around the clock, and the car parks have CCTV, fencing and barriers. It suits families and anyone who'd rather not hunt for a space at 5am, and it's usually cheaper than parking on the airport itself.

The website also sells parking at other UK airports, airport hotels with parking, lounge passes and resort transfers. Airport hotel, lounge and parking bookings are covered by its Never Beaten On Price promise.

Luton works a little differently. When you drive in, a photo booth scans the whole car in about five seconds to record its condition. You then leave your keys in a numbered drop box and catch the shuttle, which is included in the price and runs 24 hours a day. The ride takes around 14 minutes. Customers at the Birmingham site rate it 9.4 out of 10 on average, across more than 4,000 reviews on the Airparks site.

What's worth a look

Six options from the Airparks site, with the guide prices shown today.

Airparks Birmingham is the original site. It has free Wi-Fi and heated shelters, and the shuttle takes about 14 minutes. At Gatwick, the park and ride on Copthorne Road serves both terminals, with buses every 10 to 15 minutes, day and night.

If you've got an early flight, a hotel-and-parking package can take the pressure off. The Sofitel is linked to Gatwick's North Terminal and starts from £90 for a night plus 8 days of parking.
